You'll learn essential techniques, including analysis and technique correction, drills and skills, video analysis, creating individualized coaching programs, and how to assess and coach both individuals and groups to enhance their surfing performance.

Aim

Coach individuals and groups to improve intermediate to advanced level surfing ability.

Locations / Remit

Surf up to 6ft (2 metres), at a range of different surfbreaks.

Entry Requirements


Before starting this course, you will have:
  • at least 1,500 to 2,000 hours surfing experience at all types of surf breaks (beach, reef, point breaks).
  • Have surfing skill and knowledge equivalent to ASI Surf Wise Level 9 Advanced Surfer.  Able to perform and link advanced level manoeuvres - roundhouse cut-back, floater, snap, vertical re-entry, tube ride, with power and speed, in surf up to 6ft  (2 metres), at different types of surf breaks.
  • minimum 5 years surfing instructor experience 

Pre-requisite Courses
Hold ASI Level 2 Surfing Instructor certificate 
(non ASI Level Certificates may be accepted based on experience and surfing ability.)

Study Options

This course offers the following study options:

Workshop: Ideal for people who like to complete most of the course requirements at the workshop and interact with the trainer.
  • Face to face (in-person) training
  • Complete most course requirements at the workshop.
     
Online Learning: Ideal for people who would like flexibility to complete their training.
  • Work at your own pace.
  • Video submissions of surfing ability
  • ASI’s E-learning Platform Provides access to training manuals, videos, reference materials and assessments, includes built-in language translation.

Course Requirements - Workshop

Ideal for people who like to complete most of the course requirements at the workshop and interact with the trainer.
  • Face to face (in-person) training
  • Complete most course requirements at the workshop.
  • Duration:  2 days.

  • Complete theory and exercises.
  • Demonstrate ASI Surf Wise Level 9 Advanced Surfer surfing ability.Able to perform and link advanced level manoeuvres - roundhouse cut-back, floater, snap, vertical re-entry, tube ride, with power and speed, in surf up to 6ft  (2 metres), at different types of surf breaks.

After Workshop:
  • Submit written project - prepare an individualised coaching program for two different surfers.  

Other:
  • Submit a current ASI Surf Rescue certificate or other surf rescue certificate. Refer to: Acceptable Rescue certificates
  • Submit a current senior first aid certificate. Refer to: Acceptable First Aid certificate
Note: Surf Rescue and First Aid Certificates can be provided after workshop.

Time to Complete: You have 12 months from date of workshop to complete all course requirements.  

Re-assessment Fees: Apply if not yet competent in surfing ability or project. Fees

  • Submit video demonstrating ASI Surf Wise Level 9 Advanced Surfer surfing ability. (Able to perform and link advanced level manoeuvres - roundhouse cut-back, floater, snap, vertical re-entry, tube ride, with power and speed, in surf up to 6ft  (2 metres), at different types of surf breaks)
  • Submit written project - prepare an individualised coaching program for two different surfers.  
Other

Equipment

The following equipment and clothing is required to complete the training:
  • Surf clothing
  • Fibreglass surfboard to demonstrate your own ASI Surf Wise Level 9 advanced surfing skills.
For your written project:
  • Two surfing students at the high intermediate to low advanced level.
  • Video camera or mobile phone
In addition: 
  • Computer or device to access ASI e-learning platform  
  • Video camera or mobile phone for own surfing video (as applicable)
ASI’s E-learning Platform Provides access to training manuals, videos, reference materials and assessments, includes built-in language translation.

Certificate Issued

ASI Level 3 Surfing Coach
(valid for 12 months)

Additional Certificate

ASI also issues education department approved training certificates. These do not expire.

ASI is an Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and also issues the following certificate to students undertaking training in Australia.
