The ASI Level 3 SUP Instructor (Beginner Surf) course gives you the essential skills, safety knowledge, and coaching techniques to introduce your clients to small, fun waves — and expand your coaching into the surf zone.

What This Course Qualifies You To Do

You’ll be able to:  teach SUP surfing lessons at the beginner level  

Teach: 
In the following conditions:
  • Surf up to 1½ ft ( ½ metre)
  • White wash or on green peeling waves
  • Sandy beach, free from rocks, rips present
  • No more than 100 metres (320 ft) from shore.
After completing the course, you can:
  • run safe, structured SUP surfing lessons
  • manage students in the water
  • assess paddlers SUP surfing ability and help them progress

With your ASI SUP Instructor qualification, you can work as a SUP instructor:
  • At SUP schools and outdoor centres
  • In tourism and adventure sport programs
  • At resorts and camps
  • As a freelance SUP surfing coach
  • At your own SUP School.  Apply to become an ASI Accredited SUP School, allowing you to operate  professionally under ASI’s global standards.
ASI qualifications are internationally recognised, giving you the freedom to work and travel.

What You'll Learn

TThis course covers essential skills for teaching beginner level SUP surfing, including:

Laws & regulations:  that apply to conducting SUP surfing lessons

Risk management & safety:  ASI guidelines that apply to instructors when supervising students, including identify and assess risks, strategies to minimise risk, conducting location and dynamic risk assessments, emergency response 

Logistics planning:  locations, SUP surfing equipment, back up

Session planning:  structuring SUP surfing lessons, creating lesson plans, teaching progression, ASI SUP Wise programs 

Client management:  communication, positioning and client supervision 

Technical skills:  identify beginner level SUP surfing manoeuvres and techniques, understand ASI SUP surfing criteria matrix to identify good and poor technique.  

Client assessment:  identifying ability levels, common mistakes, correcting technique

Entry Requirements

To enrol, you must meet:

Minimum age: 18 years

SUP surfing experience: 100+ hours in 3-4ft waves

SUP surfing knowledge and skills:  Able to perform bottom turn, top turn & cutback on forehand & backhand in 3-4ft surf.  Apply correct technique and safety equivalent to ASI SUP Wise-SUP Surfing Intermediate Level

Note: 
For SUP Wise SUP Surfing Intermediate Level, you only need to state on enrolment form you have these knowledge & skills.

Course Requirements

Before you can be certified, you’ll need to complete the below: 

Personal SUP Surfing Ability:  
Demonstrate ASI SUP Wise-SUP Surfing Intermediate Level skills - able to perform bottom turn, top turn & cutback on forehand in 3-4ft surf.  Apply correct technique and safety equivalent. 

Knowledge:  Online Tests
Complete multi-choice online tests.

Practical:  Hours Experience
Complete 25 hours practical work experience, assisting in the delivery of beginner SUP surfing lessons, at an ASI or approved SUP school. 
Submit logbook of hours and declaration signed by SUP school owner or approved person. (Recognition can be provided for previous experience)

Submit Required Certificates:  Time to complete:  12 months 

Study Options

Workshop: Ideal for people who like to complete most of the course requirements at the workshop and interact with the trainer.
  • Face to face (in-person) training.
  • Duration:  1 day
Course Requirements: 
  • SUP surfing ability – completed at workshop 
  • Online test
  • Practical hours experience:  complete 20 hours (25 hours less 5 hours signed off in workshop)
  • Submit current rescue and first aid certificates
  • 2 free video assessments

What Equipment You Use

The following equipment and clothing is required to complete the training:
  • SUP surfing board or flat water SUP board
  • Paddle

  • SUP clothing suitable for SUP surfing

ASI Level 3 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Beginner Surf) Certificate

Valid for 12 months

Each year, ASI SUP Instructors renew their ASI SUP Instructor certificate.

(1) Can I enrol in Level 3 SUP Instructor (Beginner Surf) Course without enrolling in ASI SUP Wise-SUP Surfing Intermediate Level course?
No.  You must enrol in this course, as it is a pre-requisite.
However, you can enrol in ASI SUP Wise course at the same time as the Level 3 SUP Instructor course.
