ASI Surfing Education & Career Pathway Diagram
The diagram below outlines how your personal surfer skill progression directly aligns with your professional ASI instructor accreditation.
Surf Wise Surfer Skill Milestones
Before leading others in the water, coaches develop personal surf skill competencies ranging across 10 distinct levels:
- Safety & Beginner (Levels 1–3): Hold self-rescue skills and water safety. Ride white-water / foam waves straight to shore on a softboard, progressing to trimming along angled 1½ ft beach breaks.
- Intermediate (Levels 4–6): Perform and link top turns, bottom turns, and cutbacks on both forehand and backhand. Transition to fibreglass boards on 3 ft waves.
- Advanced (Levels 7–9): Perform high-performance manoeuvres—including vertical re-entries, stalls, snaps, floaters, roundhouse cutbacks, tube riding—with speed and power in up to 6 ft surf across various break types.
- Elite Advanced (Level 10): Master level, perform all manoeuvres in waves over 6 ft across beach, reef, point, and river mouth breaks, any location worldwide.
