Future SUP Surfing instructors preparing for ASI coaching qualifications.  This course is a pre-requisite and can also be completed alongside the ASI Level 3 SUP Instructor (Beginner Surf) course.  Regardless of prior experience, it ensures knowledge/skills are aligned with ASI guidelines and techniques. 

What You'll Be Able To do

You’ll have the knowledge to:  link and perform intermediate level surfing manoeuvres, with control and correct use of paddle

In the following conditions: 
  • Peeling waves  3-4ft  (1 metre)
  • Sandy beach with even gradient and small channel
  • Free from strong rips, hazards, dumping shore break
After completing the course, you will have the knowledge to:
  • paddle safely and confidently in a surf 3-4ft 
  • assess conditions and make informed decisions about where and when to paddle
  • use correct technique to perform and link manoeuvres  

What You'll Learn

This course covers essential skills for SUP surfing at the intermediate level in 3-4ft surf, including:

Safety:  identify location hazards, choose safe paddling locations, identify personal hazards, self rescue methods, correct wipe-out & getting off waves, paddling out protocol, SUP surfing etiquette

Planning:  features of intermediate level SUP surf locations, water and wave conditions

Equipment: choosing suitable SUP surfing board and gear 

Technique (SUP surfing skills):  where to enter and exit water, using and negotiating rips, positioning for take-off, how to ride wave correctly, body positioning, developing speed, turning the board 

Technique (paddle):  understand how to use the paddle to perform manoeuvres and SUP surf effectively

Technique (manoeuvres):  how to link and perform intermediate level SUP surfing manoevures (forehand and backhand): 
  • Trim 
  • Bottom turn
  • Top turn 
  • Cutback

Entry Requirements

Minimum age: 12 yo 

Swimming skills: able to swim 200 metres (656 ft), without stopping, in the surf up to 4ft

SUP surfing ability:  confident being in the ocean in breaking waves up to 4ft

SUP knowledge and skills: able to paddle with confidence, correct technique and safety equivalent to ASI SUP Wise Exposed Waters
 

Course Requirements

This is a participation course. No formal assessment is conducted for SUP surfing ability.

Complete:  multi-choice online tests – to help with understanding of key concepts. 

Time to complete:  12 months

What Equipment You Use

The following equipment and clothing is required to complete the training:
  • SUP surf SUP board
  • Paddle
  • Long leash
  • SUP clothing suitable for paddling
In addition:   
  • Computer or device to access ASI e-learning platform  

Certificate Issued

ASI SUP Wise-SUP Surfing Intermediate level certificate

No expiry date.

FAQs

Q1: Can I join this workshop if I don’t have experience paddling in 4 ft surf? 

A: No. The workshop is designed for paddlers who already have ocean paddling experience and are comfortable managing themselves in surf conditions.

If you’re still building those skills, you have two solid pathways to get ready:
  • Enrol in the ASI SUP Surfing online course to learn essential theory, ocean knowledge, safety and surf zone behaviour and paddling techniques.
  • Take practical lessons with an ASI Level 3 SUP Instructor who teaches beginner SUP surfing and can help you safely develop confidence in the ocean.
